Bonus Question (for those itching to blog more ;-)

Why do you think I keep putting the square brackets around the sub in subcultures?

Because there are many "subs" in subculture. It is made up of so many aspects that a few words can never define the "sub" in subculture. We all live in a subculture and then we individualize it with our own "subs".....

Within a culture, you will have distguished patterns of behavior that will vary between one group to the next. This is what makes any subculture unique. It begins with beliefs that are shared including attitude, ethics, morals and values which build to integrity and character of each sub group. The smaller groups are truly branches of a tree that were cultivated by our similarities and our differences. Debbie Boles

There may be many different [sub] cultures in one subculture. For instance I live in a white neighborhood, but in my home my husband cooks soul food. We are a mixed couple black and white. We are our own sub culture in our white neighborhood. There can be many different types of sub cultures on one sub culture.

[Sub] - We would never have enough time to study all of the cultures in Oklahoma City so we must break it down to [sub] culture. You and Julie have chosen three most interesting [sub]cultures in Oklahoma City and I have so enjoyed learning, experiencing, sharing, hearing, and seeing these cultures which I never would have done on my own.

I agree with the previous comments, but I would like to add that I think that adding the brackets signifies that every [sub]culture is a variation of the general idea of culture--each is culture in its own right. There is no one right culture or wrong culture. When breaking up culture as an broad idea into a basic culture and the smaller cultures/ variations of cultures that compose it, adding brackets to "subculture" signifies that "sub" does not imply "inferior" or "below" in terms of status. [Sub]cultures are lesser ideas that make up the compound idea of culture; they are lesser in quanitity, not in quality or correctness.

Does this make sense? I have a thought going on, but I want to make sure it is coherent when put into words.
